William Lockie, the history of quality

The history of William Lockie is long. It is one of the oldest families in Scotland that specialises in luxurious knitwear.

The company is located in the heart of the famous Scottish knitwear industry, Hawick, on the banks of the River Trovit, deeply hidden in the Scottish Borders. A picturesque city with a rich history. Because of its location on the river and the many mills, this place has been the heart of the Scottish wool trade since 1771. The William Lockie factory is located in the centre of Hawick.

'Lockies', as the brand is called lovingly, was founded in 1874. From the moment that Lockie opened its doors, it revolved around traditions and quality. The family business has endured many challenges over the centuries and never lost sight of quality. It is only one of the few traditional knitwear factories that can keep up with the big industry. This is due to the high quality of the materials and the finish. Big names from fashion like to work with William Lockie.

The Lockie mill, still based in Hawick, is today owned by the Thorburn family, descendants of Lockie. From the first day, this mill was used to manufacture high-quality woolen garments in traditional ways.

William Lockie jerseys of the best wool

William Lockie is mainly specialised in making woolen jumpers, cardigans, and accessories such as scarves and hats. The brand is known for the production of the softest, luxurious and finest knitted fabrics in the world.

The strength of Lockie is the accuracy in the selection of wools. Only the very best wool is used to guarantee the quality. For example, wool fibres that do not meet a certain length and thickness are rejected. By being so precise in the wool selection, the brand can deliver a consistent and reliable quality of clothing.

The wool yarn comes from the best wool spinners in Europe. Suppliers such as the Italian Loro Piana and the Scottish company Todd & Duncan are known worldwide for strong and fine wool yarn. The spinners offer the highest quality merino wool, cashmere and yellow yam yarn that are ideal for knitted cardigans and jumpers.

Despite the technological developments over the years, crafts still take place during the production of a garment. For the knitting work machines are used, the finishing is done by the skilled employees.

The different wool types

William Lockie uses different kinds of wool for knitting wool jumpers and cardigans. Each type of wool has specific properties. All species agree that they are fine in structure, one finer than the other because the wool does not tickle the skin.

Merino wool
Merino wool is a natural fibre with a very fine structure that comes from Australian Merino sheep. The wool is spun by, among others, the Italian Loro Piana. It is an active fibre that breathes, absorbs moisture and reacts to changes in body temperature. It keeps you warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot.

Geelong wool
This type of wool is a light wool type from the Geelong lamb that lives in Australia. Geelong is a very fine soft wool fibre that is only available when the lamb is first shaved. This makes a William Lockie men's jumper from Geelong thinner and softer. A fine wool type that can also be worn in the spring and summer.

Lambswool
William Lockie lambswool comes from Australian pedigree sheep that are bred specifically in South Australia where the climate is mild. Lambswool is won during the first shave of the lamb. It is a very fine fibre that gives a lot of heat.

Cashmere
It is the 'wool type of kings'! Cashmere is a precious natural fibre and sublime in terms of luxury, warmth, softness, and durability. The superfine and soft wool fibre comes from the undercoat of mountain goats from China and Mongolia and has very good thermal insulation properties.

William Lockie point of sale

William Lockie knitwear is one of the few remaining mills from the Scottish wool trade. This indicates that they are at the top of the wool trade. The secret is the use of high-quality raw materials and the precision of the production process. You will have fun with a wool jumper or hat of this brand. The quality is not only visible but also tangible. Soft, comfortable and the high-quality finish ensure optimal comfort.
